Let’s Be Clear on Glass
Swan Hill Rural City Council has joined 33 other councils across Victoria in launching Let’s Be Clear on Glass, a campaign calling on the State Government to delay the rollout of a fourth kerbside bin for glass and instead expand Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme.
The campaign highlights concerns about the cost and practicality of introducing a separate glass bin, including increased household charges, additional infrastructure requirements, and greater operational impacts for councils—particularly in regional areas.
Instead, councils are advocating for an expanded Container Deposit Scheme that includes wine and spirit bottles, building on successful models already operating in other Australian states. This approach is seen as a more cost-effective and efficient way to improve glass recycling outcomes without adding extra bins and collection services.
Communities are being encouraged to have their say and provide feedback on preferred recycling solutions through a short survey.
